Changing a shipping route to Türkiye: recalculating cost and cash timing

Checked on 21 October 2026. RelocationTR analysis for importers and exporters.

When a carrier proposes a different port or an additional land leg, comparing freight alone is insufficient. The commercial decision depends on the complete cost of delivery to the agreed place and how long the company funds the goods before receiving payment.

    What is confirmed

The European Council's conclusions of 15–16 October address threats to commercial shipping in the Black Sea. In its publication of 19 October, the European Commission describes alternative Ukrainian trade corridors using rail, road and inland waterways, alongside work to address bottlenecks. The existence of a corridor does not establish capacity for a specific shipment, its price or the safety of an individual voyage.

For a Turkish business, this is a reason to obtain a current quote for its actual cargo. These documents do not establish a universal surcharge for every shipment.

Türkiye to Russia via Iran: freight at 1.5–2 times the August level

Information confirmed for this analysis puts freight rates for shipments from Türkiye to Russia via Iran at 1.5–2 times their August 2026 level. That range concerns the named route. A particular shipment still requires a quote reflecting cargo, date, terms and included services.

A doubling of freight does not mean that the product's total cost has doubled. Update the transport component in the model, add associated charges and check the revised timing of customer payment.

Case: the goods stay the same, the delivery chain changes

Suppose an importer agrees a price for a shipment to Türkiye. Before dispatch, the carrier proposes a replacement sea route requiring an additional transfer. The new quote covers main carriage but lists terminal charges and storage separately. The customer pays after acceptance.

The company needs two calculations: the margin after all additional costs, and the cash needed if acceptance and payment move back. A lower freight line cannot answer both questions.

Compare the quotes on the same basis

    ItemWritten confirmation to obtain
Carriage and transfersFull itinerary, operators, included legs and excluded charges.
Terminal and waitingHandling, storage, free time and charges triggered by delay.
InsuranceCover for the revised route, exclusions, additional premiums and insurer approvals required.
TimingTransit time separately from waiting, transfers and clearance; conditions for schedule changes.
Contract and cashWho pays additional charges, when risk transfers and which event triggers customer payment.

    Check who bears the costs

ICC explains that Incoterms® 2020 allocate costs, risks and obligations between the parties. Articles A9/B9 collect the costs for each rule. The transaction needs an exact rule, named place and version, together with the agreed contract terms. A route change alone does not settle who must pay every surcharge.

Ask the forwarder to confirm the complete quote and its validity, the insurer to confirm cover, and the contract owner to establish the allocation of additional charges. For an international chain, also check the permissibility of the goods, participants and payments with the bank and relevant adviser. A carrier's acceptance does not settle all those conditions.

    Make the decision before dispatch

Compare delivery to the same place with the same services included. Then calculate margin and cash timing for the expected schedule and a delay. If the order works only when nothing slips, revisit price, advance payment, timing or shipment size before confirming dispatch. This is our transaction review framework, rather than a freight forecast or endorsement of a particular corridor.
